Why is all not the same? Seems there’s no sign of change The same sky shining ever so bright The same air, the same forest, and the water’s not strange Only he didn’t return from the fight. In our arguments lasting through day and through night Who’s to say, who was wrong, who was right? Only now, only now do I miss him so much Now that he didn’t return from the fight. He grew silent in need and he sang out of key He saw black when all others saw white He would not let me sleep, he would rise with the sun Last night he didn’t return from the fight. Empty blackness within, more woes up ahead Without him, I grew lonesome with fright For me, as though a wind extinguished the flames When he did not return from the fight. Now as though from captivity spring had escaped By mistake, I called him to invite, "Hey pal, leave me a drag," - all in silence is draped Last he didn’t return from the fight. Our dead will not leave us in these troubled times And our fallen will guard us through time As in water, the sky will reflect in the woods And trees will bloom, ever sublime. In the dugout we lived, with enough room for both Time caressed us on her daily flight But now, all for is one, only it seems to me That I did not return from the fight.
